We Learn and Grow Across Cultures

The Funds of Knowledge (FoK) website showcases the cultural, social, and experiential knowledge of Hong Kong’s ethnic minority (EM) communities, focusing on Indian, Nepali, Pakistani and Filipino families. FoK refers to the rich cultural knowledge, skills, values, and practices developed through everyday family and community life. Recognising these lived experiences as valuable educational and social resources helps promote a more inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive Hong Kong.

Developed from research under the ‘C-for-Chinese@JC’ Project, the study involved 190 participants and generated more than 1,300 FoK statements through interviews and questionnaires. The findings are organised into four key domains and 11 sub-domains that reflect the diversity and strengths of Hong Kong’s EM communities.

Alongside research insights, the website also provides tools and learning materials to support social workers, educators and community practitioners in building more culturally responsive and inclusive practices.

The FoK insights presented here are based on the lived experiences of specific research participants. While deeply valuable, they represent only part of the broader EM experience. Cultural expressions and perspectives may vary even within the same community. Visitors are invited to explore this website with openness and reflection, using it as a starting point for continued learning, dialogue, and collaboration across cultures.

Case Sharing

Explore real-life cases, contributed by the Project’s non-governmental organisations partners, that reveal the lived experiences and cultural perspectives of Hong Kong’s ethnic minority families.

Each case offers insights to help social workers, educators and practitioners reflect on challenges, recognise diverse needs, and strengthen inclusive and culturally responsive practices.

Culturally Responsive Service Framework

Culturally Responsive Service (CRS) is a practice grounded in the core value of cultural responsiveness. It emphasises the importance of respecting, understanding, and responding to the cultural characteristics of diverse ethnic communities when delivering social services. This includes, but is not limited to, differences in cultural background, belief, lifestyle, and language. The aim is to enhance the relevance, equity, and inclusiveness of services, ensuring that support provided is appropriate to the needs of different communities.

The concept of Funds of Knowledge (FoK) provides an important foundation for developing culturally responsive services. FoK research deepens our understanding of the cultural knowledge, values, and everyday experiences that ethnic minority families accumulate in their daily lives. These valuable insights enable service providers to begin their practice with an understanding of the community, designing approaches that are culturally sensitive and responsive to service users’ needs. The CRS Framework serves as a tool to translate this cultural knowledge into action, supporting practitioners in integrating cultural responsiveness into daily service provision and professional decision-making.
